Saria

Saria is an Aegean island surrounded by the Carpathian Sea. Sharia belongs to the Dodecanese and is located just opposite the northern tip of Karpathos. Saria has an area of ​​20.4 sq.km. and an altitude of 631 m (2,067 feet). According to the 2011 census in the existing settlement in the northern part of the islet (Kato (Earth)), Argos, 45 people live, of which 22 scientists who are doing research on the Mediterranean seal, as they themselves stated. The shortest approach to Argos is from the sea and more specifically from the beach of Palatia through the gorge of the river Edis.It is separated from Karpathos by a shallow and narrow strait, the "Narrow of Sharia", 100 meters wide and 2.5 meters deep, which is prohibitive for the passage of large submarines. The northernmost point of the island is Cape Paraspori, the southernmost Cape Pano Riva, the eastern Cape of Asprousa and the westernmost extremity of Cape Akrotiri.

In Saria and more specifically in the place Palatia, according to a disputed testimony of the geographer Strabo, the existence of a city named Nisyros is placed. The island is scattered with ancient monuments, ruins and remnants of ancient settlements, while it was also the base of Saracen pirates. Its ancient name was Saros and in the 5th century BC. belonged to the Athenian Alliance.

In Sharia there are traces of the presence of man of the Neolithic era and the early Bronze Age. Remains of fortifications have been found on the western slope of Kastellos hill since the period of historical times.In Palatia there are early Christian and medieval buildings, while the peculiar medieval settlement of the 10th c. with the strange vaulted buildings, located on the hill above the Palaces, it is probable that it was an Arab settlement or base of Saracen pirates. It is an important habitat and breeding ground for birds and marine organisms and has been described as "Important Area for European Birds" It hosts a significant number of rare birds of prey, such as the Spy, the Eagle, and the Black-tailed Deer.Saria along with Karpathos and the surrounding sea area, due to the variety of habitats they have and the rare species that host both nationally and European level, belong to the Natura 2000 Network. During the summer months the island's beaches are flooded with many vacationers.
